Content

The course covers the general properties of mobile systems. In addition, you will familiarize yourself with the special features and most useful design patterns of mobile system programming. Special attention will be given to J2ME and Symbian environments.

Taking the course in English

The course is lectured in Finnish. However, most of the lecture material is in written English. The excersice instruction is given in English.

To pass the course, there is one mandatory Symbian S60 C++ assignment and one exam for you to pass. Coding assignment should be done in teams of two or three. If you want to do the assignment in a team of one, contact the course assistant first. In addition, there is one voluntary Java assignment which is done individually.

Final exam is on 8.5. 12-15 in main building's K and J halls.

In Autumn 2008, there will be a resit in which the Spring 2008 bonus-points are still valid.

Course information

Lectures

Lectures are on Thursdays at 12-15, starting 7.2.2008 in T2. The lectures are in Finnish and are transmitted as videoconference from Tampere. Most of the lecture material is in English. The lectures are given by Juha Järvensivu, TUT/TTY.

Exercises

Excercises start on week 7 and are held on Thursdays 16-18 in Maari-K. The exercise times are complementary.

Tuesdays exercises are cancelled due to small ammount of enrolled students. The class is still reserved for the students of the course for individual work.

Exercise environment

Eclipse based Carbide C++ IDE is used as the Symbian C++ environment. You need an account in Forum Nokia to download and install the environment. The following programs should be installed:

Please note, that all these and your Carbide workspace should be in directory with no white spaces, a.k.a. "program files" is no good.

Assignment

The Symbian assignment is submitted in parts during the week exercises.

Participating in the week exercises is voluntary except the submission times on weeks 10, 15, and 18.

Each group will present a demo of the Symbian assingment on Wednesday 30.4 at 8-10 in Maari-K class. If you have done your assingment somewhere else, please make sure it works in the class. Groups must send an e-mail to the course address before 27.4 23.59, which contains group name, members, preferred assignment returning time, and two backup times. The message must have topic "MOBO demo reservation". Times are given in the order the e-mail are received. 10 minutes of time has been reserved for each assignment presentation. As many group members as possible shoud be present.

The topic of the actual submission message must be "MOBO final assignment" and it must contain following information: The mail must be sent to the course e-mail address.
