Final Projects

Handing in the Final Projects

The final projects are handed in and presented at a session in January. If your final project is late you can hand it in at the next course's session unless an extra session is held.

You should test you projects with different equipment - someone is usually failed because their projects do not work in the session. You presentation is part of the final grade.

Technology

The student will show his/her grasp of the technologies taught in the course. Thus for example not using sound must be justified (e.g. doing a silent-film). There are two final projects:

  • Flash
  • DVD

One of the medias may be changed, but this must be discussed with the course assistant.

DVD

The emphasis is on the navigation and such features. A filmstrip only is not enought for the DVD-project. You can include e.g. picture-galleries, language-settings, etc.

A good length for the filmstrip is 30s..3min. We can't give an exact length as each film is individual and we want to give the students as much artistic freedom as possible. Music videos, for example, usually last the duration of the song and are sometimes small movies.

Flash

Flash is a versatile tool so the project can be almost anything from a company introduction or commercial to a fairy tale. The Flash-project is graded in the same way as the DVD, so you should think about the user interface. You can also embedd video in Flash.

You can reduce your workload by embedding earlier assignments in your final project. We can't give an exact duration for the flash-presentation as the duration for example of animated movies have varied between 30s and 5 min and in many projects the animation is fragmented into small parts of the user interface and other interactivity.

If the flash-project is part of a webpage no points will be awarded for the rest of the page. The webpage can actually make the grading harded as we need to separate what parts are flash. Only the flash-part(s) will affect the grade.

Topic

Your own subject is important: making a worse version of an existing game-idea is not a successfull solution. The topic could be for example:

  • a portfolio,
  • an animation,
  • a player,
  • a travelogue,
  • a program for teaching a language,
  • a math game,
  • a childrens' game (you can show off with a smart, unique user interface),
  • a fairy-tale,
  • an advertisement,
  • a presentation for a club/hobby/etc,
  • an interactive work of art
  • or something else...

Style and usability

Think about your focus group and the desired mood and design the colors, fonts, UI, and language accordingly. You can find help among the links. Your project should have a coherent and finished style, the navigational elements, pictures and content should match each other. You can for example tint the pictures with the same color or draw them in the same style as the navigational elements.

You will be graded on usability. This has been a problem specially with the DVD:s.

Synopsis

The topic will approved by the assistants in the synopsis. You can ask about the topic earlier as well! The deadline for the synopsis is 17.10.

Copyright

You should make sure that you have permission to use the pictures, sounds, etc.

Workload

The workload varies between students so much that we can't give an estimation for the number of hours required. Some projects are completed easily while others will experience problems. You should start early as you may experience technical problems. We recommend you do most of the work while the assistants still have receptions.
