T-110.557 Research seminar on telecommunications software (3 cr)
Tietoliikenneohjelmistojen tutkimusseminaari (3 ov) L, V
News
The autumn 2002 version of this course is now finished, and the grades of the students who passed the course should now be in Oodi. Most of the papers presented at the seminar event have been published, and can be found from here.
Despite some contradicting information, this course will not be held during the 2003 spring semester.
Seminar topic fall 2002
The research seminar on telecommunications software will this year focus on the latest developments in ad hoc mobile wireless networks. The seminar will cover radio technologies, ad hoc routing protocols, service discovery mechanisms, overall ad hoc networking architecture issues, and application interworking.
Requirements and participation
The seminar is targeted for post-graduate students and advanced under-graduate students. Priority is given to post-graduate students and students who are planning for post-graduate studies in Telecommunications Software and Multimedia. The number of participants is limited to 16 students. Seminar papers will be collected into a seminar proceeding. Seminar language is English and all papers are prepared in English.
Structure of the seminar
This seminar does not include lectures. The seminar will be carried out in four phases:
- Preparing a research paper on the selected topic.
- Acting as a peer-reviewer for another student during the writing process.
- Presenting the research paper in the one-day intensive seminar.
- Acting as an opponent for another student in the seminar.
For each student there will be one senior tutor assigned to help setting the targets for the paper and to help in preparing the paper. Also, for each student there will be one other student assigned as a peer-reviewer for the paper.
Schedule (final plan)
- 17.9.2002 at 18:00-19:00 Introduction to the seminar (TIK T3)
- 17.9.2002 at 19:00 Signing for the seminar topics starts after the introduction. Please, do not send any queries or topic reservations before that. Signing for the seminar to be sent to Tero Hasu. When signing up, you need to supply:
- Your name.
- Your student number.
- The year you graduated with a Master's degree (if you are a postgraduate student).
- A research plan. This is essentially a short description of why you should to be on the course. If you are studying, mention what, where and towards what degree. Perhaps you are or will be doing research on a related topic, or some project at work is related to ad hoc networks. Maybe you are just otherwise interested in the topic that you are proposing to do, and will probably want to explain why.
- A topic abstract. Give a short description of the topic you would like to cover in the seminar, along the lines of what you would perhaps write into the abstract of the seminar paper itself. (What is the subject matter you would be discussing, from what angle would you be looking at it, what would be the scope of your paper, what problems would your paper be addressing, that kind of thing.) Topics that are essentially just literature reviews are fine, but probably not a good idea if you are aiming to submit your paper into a conference.
- Two alternative topic choices, in order of preference. These are in case there are many others who have the same preferred topic area as you.
- 23.9.2002 at 12:00 Deadline for signing up to the seminar topics.
- 27.9.2002 Confirmation to accepted seminar participants
- 31.10 2002 at 16:00 Preparation of an outline for the seminar paper
- Table of contents
- Outline of the paper
- Source material list
- 25.11.2002 at 12:00
Deadline for submitting the final paper. The seminar proceedings will be printed on this material, and this is also the version that will be sent to the opponent shortly after the submission. Note that there's not much time between this deadline and the seminar itself, so this is a strict deadline. If you want your paper in the seminar proceedings, send it in by this time, in the required format. See below for submission instructions.- 28.11.2002 9:00-18:00 One-day intensive seminar in Sjökulla
- 5.12.2002 Final comments for the papers and presentations from opponents.
Instructions for submitting the final paper
Please prepare the final version in LaTeX format. Use this template, or at least try and ensure that your paper looks the same as if it had been prepared using the template. Submit the final paper to your tutor and to Tero Hasu. Send both a PostScript version (so that your paper is ready for sending to a printer) and the LaTeX source code (in case any editing is required prior to inclusion in the proceedings); make sure to include all the source code, including any BibTeX and picture files.
Keywords
A note regarding keywords in the LaTeX template, quoting Teemupekka Virtanen:
You should add keyword which describe your article in the end of abstract. In the template there was an empty placeholder for those but not a actual text. You can add them using the following template:
------------------------------ The abstract text ends here. \vspace{5mm} KEYWORDS: first, two, thee \end{abstract} -------------------------------Note that the keywords should be placed within the abstract and not after that as said in the template.
Seminar schedule
The schedule of the seminar is below. Those giving a presentation, do note that although you have a half hour slot, your presentation should only be about 20-25 minutes, so that some time is left for questions.
