Seminar topic fall 2003

The research seminar on telecommunications software will this year focus on the convergence of ad hoc mobile wireless networks and cellular networks. The objective of the seminar is to analyze middleware services that can enable seamless service interworking among cellular networks and wireless ad hoc networks. The technical reference frame for this seminar is the 3GPP standard deploying IETF specifications, and specifically, technologies that are important for service discovery, session management, service interworking and trust. Topic and material are described in another page.

Below are the general topics of this seminar. Detailed topics to be agreed with the tutors.

  1. IP level connectivity establishment. The use of Autoconfiguration protocols, DHCP and DNS in ad hoc environments.
    Author: Zahed Iqbal
    Tutor: Kimmo Raatikainen
  2. (Ad hoc routing not primarily addressed in this seminar, though, if specific interest and good topics proposed).
  3. Service discovery mechanisms to find availability of services. The use of Service Location Protocol (SLP) for discovery compared with the 3GPP UDDI or Parlay framework.
Authors: Juha Pärssinen, Pasi Eronen and Teemu Koponen
    Tutor: Mari Korkea-aho
  4. Trust establishment and trust experience. The use of Diameter protocol for Authentication and Authorization to provide trust and security.
    Author: Pradip Lamsal
    Tutor: Kimmo Raatikainen
  5. Session management to be able to communicate among groups of people. The use of SIP protocol for session management, instant messaging and presence services.
    Author: Päivi Kankaanpää
    Tutor: Antti Ylä-Jääski
  6. (Service level interworking between different applications and among heterogeneous 3GPP cellular networks and wireless local area networks. This subject area not primarily addressed, though, can be considered if strong interest and good topics proposed.)

Requirements and participation

The seminar is targeted for post-graduate students (doing licentiate or doctor's degree) and advanced under-graduate students in Telecommunications Software. Priority is given to post-graduate students and students who are planning for post-graduate studies in Telecommunications Software. The number of participants is limited to 12 students grouped into four teams each team consisting of 3 students. Seminar papers will be collected into a seminar proceeding. Seminar language is English and all papers are prepared in English.

Prerequisites for this course is a seminar, for example T-110.501 Network Security or T-110.551 Internetworking.

This seminar does not include lectures. Papers are prepared in teams, each team consisting of three students. The seminar will be carried out in four phases:

For each team there will be one senior tutor assigned to help setting the targets for the paper and to help in preparing the paper. Also, for each team there will be one other team assigned as a peer-reviewer for the paper.
