Purpose

The current core language of WWW (i.e., HTML) is being replaced by next generation markup language called eXtensible Markup Language (XML). The main advantage of XML is that it separates content from presentation. This allows reuse of content. In addition, the content can be formatted using several XML based markup languages, e.g., Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL), eXtensible Stylesheet Language Formatting Objects (XSL FO), Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), and eXtensible HyperText Markup Language (XHTML).

XML has several application areas in digital media. For example, multimedia content can be coded using SMIL. SMIL can be used, e.g., in streaming of multimedia content and mobile multimedia messaging. Similarly, SVG can be used for graphics, animation, and visual effects. Finally, XHTML will be the next generation markup language of both WAP and i-mode.

XML based content can be transformed using XSL. This is convenient, for example, in multichannel publishing. The original content is transformed to presentations suitable for different kinds of end user terminals including personal computers, Personal Digital Assistants (PDA), and digital television Set-Top Boxes (STB). This is not possible with HTML, since the HTML file contains instructions for presentation, which is usually designed only for personal computers.

In addition to transforming content for different devices, the content can also be tailored for different user profiles. This, so called personalization, requires that user profile are transferred from client to the server. For example, the Composite Capability / Preference Profile (CC/PP) protocol has been proposed for this purpose.

The CC/PP protocol is so called metadata language, which can be used to attach different kinds of useful information to content. Metadata is especially useful in content management and publishing. It allows, for example, more efficient retrieval and filtering of content.

This workshop is intended both for researchers and industry practitioners working with next generation WWW systems. It is an opportunity to present and observe latest research results and industry trends. All papers submitted to this workshop will be reviewed by at least two independent referees. Acceptance will be based primarily on originality and quality of the papers.

XMLinDM'02 will be held in conjunction with the 8th International Conference on Distributed Multimedia Systems (DMS'2002).
